THE MISSION OF PUBLIC COMMUNICATION*

August 21, 2018

Through comprehensive analysis, it is clear to us that to improve our public communication in the new era, we must uphold the Thought on Socialism with Chinese Characteristics for a New Era and the guiding principles of the 19th CPC National Congress, and strengthen our commitment to the Four Consciousnesses and the Four-sphere Confidence. Our mission is to uphold socialism, rally public support, foster a new generation with sound values and ethics, develop Chinese culture, and build a positive image of China, in order to inspire the people to embrace shared ideals, convictions, values and moral standards, and mobilize them to contribute more to the overall interests of the Party and the country.

– Upholding socialism means championing Marxism and socialism with Chinese characteristics. We must arm all Party members, educate our people, and advance our work under the guidance of the Thought on Socialism with Chinese Characteristics for a New Era. We must make a greater effort to study, understand and apply the thought, making sure that Marxism in contemporary China and the 21st century takes root in the hearts of our people.

– Rallying public support means making sure that public opinion stays on the right track. We must raise our voice to advocate the core socialist values, augment positive energy, extend the influence of mainstream opinion, and bolster the morale of the Party and the people, so that they will unite as one and progress towards the goals set by the CPC Central Committee.

– Fostering a new generation means educating people with sound values and ethics and an advanced socialist culture. We must promote socialist cultural and ethical progress, and foster and live by the core socialist values. We must strengthen the people’s political awareness and improve their ethical and cultural standards. In this way, we will be able to foster a new generation capable of shouldering the mission of national rejuvenation.

– Developing Chinese culture means promoting the creative transformation and development of traditional Chinese culture, carrying on our revolutionary cultural traditions, and developing an advanced socialist culture on the path to socialist culture with Chinese characteristics. This will inspire the cultural creativity of the whole nation and develop a thriving socialist culture in China.

– Building a positive image of China means increasing our capacity for international communication, so as to tell China’s stories in an engaging manner and make the voice of China heard. We should project an accurate, multidimensional and panoramic image of China, and increase China’s soft power and the influence of Chinese culture in the world.

These are weighty responsibilities for our colleagues working in the field of public communication in the new era. They are fundamental requirements for opening up new dimensions in public discourse at this new starting point. We should always bear them in mind and act on them.
