Qiushi Journal Issue Preview: No. 24, 2024

An article by General Secretary Xi Jinping on advancing the Party's self-reform was published in this year's 24th issue of Qiushi Journal.

The article states that the CPC has continuously deepened its understanding of self-reform, accumulated practical experience and made a series of theoretical achievements in its efforts to strengthen full and rigorous Party self-governance in the new era. It has provided answers to major questions such as why our Party needs to conduct self-reform, why it is able to do so, and how to advance self-reform.

The article underscores that in advancing the Party's self-reform, upholding the centralized and unified leadership of the CPC Central Committee is the fundamental guarantee, and steering social transformation is its ultimate goal. In the process, we must take as fundamental guidelines the Thought on Socialism with Chinese Characteristics for a New Era, with a view to escaping the cycle of rise and fall as well as tackling the special challenges that a large party like ours faces. Efforts are also needed to improve the system for exercising full and rigorous Party self-governance, and to build strong Party organizations and strengthen the ranks of officials. The article also urges efforts to improve Party conduct, enforce discipline, and fight corruption by integrating Party self-supervision with public oversight.

The article notes that it is imperative to deepen the understanding of the laws underlying the Party's self-reform, and take more rigorous approaches and measures in this regard, ensuring that concrete actions are taken in all areas and in every link.

This issue contains two Qiushi commentaries, with one focusing on studying, publicizing, and implementing the guiding principles of the Central Economic Work Conference and the other elucidating the significance of following the guidance of Xi Jinping thought on culture on the new journey.

Liang Yanshun, Secretary of the CPC Anhui Provincial Committee, introduces Anhui's pioneering efforts in furthering reform and promoting Chinese modernization.

The theoretical study group of the CPC Leadership Group of the Ministry of Natural Resources studies a compilation of excerpts from discourses on the natural resources work by Xi Jinping and illustrates how to utilize natural resources in a safe, efficient and sustained manner.

Pei Jinjia, Minister and Secretary of the CPC Leadership Group of the Ministry of Veterans Affairs, elucidates the Ministry's new responsibilities and new practices in conducting work related to veterans' affairs on the new journey in the new era. 

The article by the CPC Leadership Group of China South-to-North Water Diversion Co., Ltd. introduces the Group's efforts in accelerating the development of the main framework and major arteries of the national water network.

The CPC Heilongjiang Provincial Committee recounts the stories of Yang Shi'e, a pioneer of underwater acoustic engineering in China, who was posthumously awarded the title of “Role Model of the Times.” 

Bai Yugang, a member of the Standing Committee and Director of the Publicity Department of the CPC Shandong Provincial Committee, elaborates on leveraging the advantages of local cultural resources to write a splendid chapter for Shandong Province.

Shen Zhuanghai, Executive Deputy Secretary of the CPC Wuhan University Committee and a professor at the School of Marxism of Wuhan University, offers his insights on how to gain a deeper understanding of Xi Jinping thought on culture, drawing on the recently published outline for studying Xi Jinping thought on culture.

Qian Chengdan, founding Director of the Institute of Area Studies and Boya Chair Professor at Peking University, elucidates for readers the emergence, continuation, and modern transformation of civilizations.

An article from the Research Center for Xi Jinping Thought on Ecological Conservation summarizes the key points of a seminar on the study and implementation of Xi Jinping thought on ecological conservation in 2024.

This issue concludes with diagrams released by the National Bureau of Statistics, which illustrate the economic growth of major countries and regions and their contribution rates to the global economy, as well as the primary social indicators for various income groups worldwide and the BRICS countries. These diagrams indicate the major achievements of China's social and economic development in the past 75 years since the founding of the People's Republic of China in 1949.
