Qiushi Journal Issue Preview: No. 23, 2024
An article by General Secretary Xi Jinping on upholding fundamental principles and breaking new ground, an important approach of the Party in the governance of China in the new era, was published in this year’s 23rd issue of Qiushi Journal.
The article says that the CPC is advancing a great cause that has no precedent in history. Only by upholding fundamental principles can the Party avoid losing its bearings or making catastrophic mistakes, and only by breaking new ground can we meet the call of the day and shape the trends of the times.
According to the article, we should approach Marxism with respect for science and in the spirit of seeking truth. We must never waver in upholding the basic tenets of Marxism, the overall leadership of the Party, and socialism with Chinese characteristics. We should keep pace with the times and adapt to the evolution of practice. We should approach each and every new thing with great enthusiasm and never stop broadening and deepening our understanding of the world. We must dare to say what has never been said and do what has never been done, and we must use new theories to guide new practice.
The article says that it is a guiding philosophy for national governance in the new era to uphold fundamental principles and break new ground. The exploration of the Chinese path to modernization is the process of developing while carrying on fine traditions, and the process of upholding fundamental principles while breaking new ground. In this process, we must uphold the fundamentals, origins, root and soul of Chinese modernization, and unwaveringly adhere to its Chinese characteristics, essential requirements, and major principles, ensuring that Chinese modernization progresses along the right track. At the same time, we must give more prominence to innovation in overall national development and vigorously promote innovations in theory and practice, in our institutions and culture, and in all other aspects.
Upholding fundamental principles and breaking new ground is also one of major principles for further deepening reform in all respects. To achieve this goal, we must keep to our path and not sway in our commitment. To secure new progress in reform, we should, on the one hand, uphold the Four Cardinal Principles and stay confident in the path, theory, system, and culture of socialism with Chinese characteristics; on the other hand, we should embrace innovations and tackle challenges head-on. In a word, to strike a balance between upholding fundamental principles and breaking new ground, what needs to be reformed should be reformed unswervingly and what does not need to be reformed should remain unchanged.
