Qiushi Journal Issue Preview: No. 22, 2024
An article on supporting Chinese modernization with high-quality population development by General Secretary Xi Jinping was published in Issue No. 22, 2024, Qiushi Journal.
The article stresses that population development is a vital issue bearing on the rejuvenation of the Chinese nation and that Chinese modernization is now confronted with new demographic issues.
In line with the strategic plans for building a great country and advancing national rejuvenation, it is imperative to refine the population development strategy for the new era, as well as understand and adapt to the new situation of population development. Concrete steps should be taken to enhance the overall quality of the population, maintain an appropriate birth rate and population size, and cultivate modern human resources that are of high quality, abundant, well-structured, and reasonably distributed, thereby enabling high-quality population development to support Chinese modernization.
In the process, four principles should be upheld. First, we should promote high-quality economic and social development through high-quality population development; second, in addressing population issues, we should take a systematic and holistic approach; third, reform and innovation should be prioritized in advancing high-quality population development; fourth, we should continue to ensure people’s well-rounded development and common prosperity for all.
The article outlines several key tasks in our efforts to support Chinese modernization with high-quality population development, including deepening the reform and innovation of education and health services, establishing and refining supportive policies on childbirth, strengthening the development and utilization of human resources, implementing a national strategy to address population aging, and better coordinating the relationship between population, economic and social development, and resources and the environment.
