Qiushi Journal Issue Preview: No.5, 2024
An article by General Secretary Xi Jinping on strengthening and improving the work of the Chinese People's Political Consultative Conference (CPPCC) and fully developing consultative democracy was published in this year's fifth issue of Qiushi Journal. The article is a compilation of excerpts from Xi's important discourses on relevant topics from February 2013 to June 2023.
The CPPCC is a great achievement of the CPC in combining the Marxist-Leninist theories of the united front, political parties, and democratic politics with the conditions in China, according to the article.
It adds that the CPPCC is an innovation in terms of the political system involving political parties, prominent figures without party affiliation, people's organizations, and people from all walks of life and all ethnic groups under the leadership of the CPC.
Under the leadership of the CPC, the CPPCC adheres to the two themes of unity and democracy, serves the CPC and the country's central tasks, and plays a very important role in the founding of the People's Republic of China and in each historical period of socialist revolution, development and reform, the article notes.
Since the 18th CPC National Congress in 2012, we have placed a series of new demands on the CPPCC's work by drawing lessons from the past. It is imperative to adhere to the CPPCC system, champion the cause of the CPPCC, carry out the work related to the united front with a strong sense of responsibility, and unite more people around the Party, says the article.
The system of CPC-led multi-party cooperation and political consultation is a basic political system of our country. It is a new type of political party system grown out of Chinese soil. The article emphasizes the need to fully develop consultative democracy, which is an important way by which whole-process people's democracy is practiced. The article also calls for efforts to improve the system of consultative democracy, promote consultations carried out by political parties, people's congresses, government departments, committees of the CPPCC, people's organizations, communities, and social organizations, and improve various institutional consultative platforms, so as to promote extensive, multilevel, and institutionalized development of consultative democracy.
